Brisbane Ballet | Giselle: Whispers of the Schwarzwald
Perceptiō Productions was commissioned by Brisbane Ballet to document their world premiere production of Giselle: Whispers of the Schwarzwald, staged at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, South Bank, in March 2026.
A reimagining of one of ballet's most enduring works, the production transported audiences into a fog-shrouded Black Forest, weaving Rhineland romance with Teutonic folklore, betrayal, and redemption. For Brisbane Ballet, it was a bold first — a world premiere. For us, it was personal.
Perceptiō Productions founder Alisa Poturaeva is a former classical ballerina with over 15 years of professional performance experience across international stages. When Brisbane Ballet came to us for this project, Giselle already held a special place for her. "It's one of my favourite pieces," Alisa says. "You have to make it look the way it feels."
That insider understanding is what separates this work from standard performance photography. Alisa knows the music, the choreography, the physical discipline behind each movement. She knows which moment in a phrase is worth capturing, and which split second will make a static image feel like it's still in motion. Ballet performance photography demands anticipation, not reaction — and that only comes from having lived inside the art form.
The result is a body of work that captures not just the dancers, but the atmosphere, the tension, and the emotion that make Giselle what it is.
